Beach Ball Belly by Orange County Photography, Mark Jordan Photography
TECHNICAL
All the images were captured digitally with a Canon 5D and Canon 70-200 lens. The primary light source for Beach Ball Belly was south facing, 100% natural sunlight. To soften and diffuse the sunlight, I chose a 4x6' translucent panel on her left (positioned just out of frame), a 4x4' white bounce on the her right (to soften the shadow edge and bounce light into the shadows), and a 6x6' black gobo above her head. The gobo eliminated downward shadowing and forced the light to tunnel in on her left.
Though Beach Ball Belly appears to be captured at the beach, it was in fact created at a local park in a playground sandbox. The model is to be commended for sitting in the blistering hot, Southern California summer sun with a nine month beach ball belly. As to other Belly Art Photos you might have seen, all were photographed on location in the home of one of my clients.

The umbrella background is actually the back of it. When we attempted to to place her under the umbrella (to give the feel of being shielded from the direct sun on the beach, and thus a low contrast scenario), the colors of the umbrella reflected much too strongly upon her skin. So, we simply turned it around and used the outside of the umbrella. Even then, I relied on Photoshop to remove considerably orange and yellow from her right side.
Each Belly Art photography session was approximately 30 minutes, with the paintings requiring a few to several hours, and digital post-production artwork taking anywhere from a day to a week.
The Belly Art Photos project took several months to complete, with babies being born in the process.
I am unaware of other photographers in Orange County creating belly art paintings, probably because of the extensive time required to design, paint, photograph and digital enhance each image. Even with the Belly Art Photos meticulously captured, the work had just begun. It took another year of planning, deliberations and untold hours of fine detail to complete the project.
