Operation Odyssey Dawn

Pentagon just confirmed reports that the United States has launched cruise missiles against the air defenses in Libya. The action is an international military effort, which is aimed at the Libyan leader, Muammar Qaddafi. It's the "first phase of a multi-phase operation."

50-100 cruise missiles were launched approximately at 2:00, ET Saturday, March 19. This attack followed the French fighter jets' sorties over Benghazi. According to a senior military advisor, the U.S. is on the "leading edge" of coalition efforts to enforce the recent resolution enacted by the U.N.

A senior Pentagon official, Admiral William Gortney, just announced that the mission has to primary goals: one is to prevent further attacks on civilians by Qaddafi's forces, and the other is to develop a no-fly zone by pursuing Qaddafi's integrated air defenses. Currently U.S. has twenty targets in their sights.


The military armada includes three Navy submarines, the USS Florida, USS Scranton, and USS Providence, according to the Pentagon. The Florida is also equipped to carry Navy Seal commandos for ground operations. However, President Obama has assured the country in a press conference that "No US troops will be deployed on the ground."

Bomb damage assessment will take time but will be forthcoming.
